Learn how to program at our Piece of Cake Patisserie
Piece of cake programming
Programming for you
Piece of Cake Programming is a SQL course for all. We believe in a different learning approach because anybody with general smarts and savviness can and should learn how to program. Instead of serious and arduous work, we are treating programming as the playing and puzzling with data it actually is.
Practise with our Piece of Cake Patisserie
As learning should be fun and relatable, you’re going to learn how to program with our Piece of Cake Patisserie. Basically everything in our course – data, examples, exercises – is about pies, cakes and crumbles and the people who eat them. The only downfall is you might get hungry while learning.
All good things come in threes
Piece Of Cake programming is divided in three parts. After completing all parts you’ll be able to program in SQL. Each part focuses on specific goals. The parts are consecutive and each one builds up to the next part. By completing the course you’ll have a really good programming foundation.

Part I is all about getting started
Part I is all about getting started. So it kicks off with an introduction to data and programming. Followed by guiding you through the installation of the necessary software. The software is open source, meaning as much as you can download it online for free. Once you’ve downloaded the software, you need to import our data from Piece of Cake Patisserie and you’re good to go. Next thing you know you are programming your first query and learning how to filter and sort your data.
- Introduction
- Install (free) software
- Import data
- Buildi first query
- Filter data
- Sort data
Part II focuses on data-analysis
Part II focuses on data-analysis. This sounds more complicated than it is; data analysis is nothing but turning data into information. Once you have data you want to know how much, how often, how many etc. This is exactly what your gonna learn in part II of Piece of Cake Programming. In parts II you’ll learn the most important statements to analyze your data; you’ll learn basic math and descriptive statistics.
- Introduction
- Basic math
- SUM-statement
- COUNT-statement
- COUNT DISTINCT
- MAX, MIn, AVG- statement
Part III covers the different kinds of joins to combine datasets
Part III covers the different kinds of joins so you are able to combine multiple datasets in one query. This is good stuff, because it makes programming that much more interesting. As always part III starts off with an introduction on the principles of joining datasets and the distinction between the different kind of joins. Part III addresses the left join, inner join, full join and joining multiple datasets at once.
- Introduction
- Distinction between different joins
- Left join
- Inner join
- Full join
- Multiple joins
